New school complex – District 4 of Florence
The new School Complex in Florence’s District 4 will house the Meucci and Galilei secondary schools. This project is the result of an agreement between the Metropolitan City of Florence and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
The central idea of the project is to create a community hub that interacts with the city through a large green area, with the aim of connecting this new urban dimension to the city and its landscape. The mission is to create a system of buildings that meet the highest safety requirements, maximum internal comfort, optimal psychophysical and aesthetic perception of spaces, as well as reducing management and maintenance costs. The campus will cover an area of approximately 40,000 square metres, with 110 classrooms, 32 laboratories, 2 libraries, 2 gyms, an auditorium shared by the institutes, administrative offices, services such as a bar, warehouse, archives and infirmary, equipped green areas and car parks. The facilities will be designed according to the principles of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability and will also be able to host activities outside school hours, becoming meeting points and reference points for the local community and the surrounding urban fabric.
The project involves the gradual construction and demolition of the schools, with the new Meucci campus due to be completed by August 2024 and the Galilei campus by 2026. The total investment exceeds £35 million and the campus will be able to accommodate up to 2,400 students, representing an innovative and sustainable model of school construction for the city of Florence.
