New Genoa Breakwater
The new breakwater in Genoa is a shining example of environmental sustainability and engineering innovation. One of the most significant aspects concerns the recovery of approximately 7 million tonnes of rock material from the demolition of the old breakwater, which will be reused as the foundation for the new structure. The construction involves the use of enormous prefabricated concrete caissons, built directly on site and then positioned in the sea using a semi-floating platform. These caissons, some over 33 metres high—the equivalent of a 10-storey building—are then filled with recycled material, reducing environmental impact and promoting the circular economy. In addition to the environmental aspects, the new breakwater will increase the port’s capacity, generating significant economic benefits for both the city and the country.
