First maxi caisson successfully laid for Genoa’s new breakwater
The New Genoa Breakwater is a strategic infrastructure designed to ensure greater safety and promote the development of the Ligurian port, a key hub for the economy of the city and the entire region.
The first mega caisson, an imposing structure that marks the start of the most advanced works, was recently laid.
This caisson, as tall as an eleven-storey building, is the first of 35 larger caissons planned to be placed in the deepest seabed. The gigantic concrete block was positioned in its final location off the port of Genoa.
To give an idea of its size, the caisson measures 33 metres in height, 67 metres in length and 30 metres in width. These technical data testify to the scale of the work, which is set to radically transform the capacity and safety of the Ligurian port.
The final and executive structural, geotechnical and maritime hydraulic design, environmental consulting and design safety coordination were handled by F&M Ingegneria and Ramboll UK.
