Ceremony of the Laying of the First Stone of the New Genoa Breakwater
Tomorrow, Thursday, May 4 at 11:00 a.m., the Ceremony of Laying the First Stone of the New Breakwater in Genoa will be held at the headquarters of the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority – Palazzo San Giorgio – Sala delle Compere.
The breakwater: what is it and what is it for?
The breakwater, which protects the harbor from storm surges and waves, will be torn down and moved 450 meters offshore to make room for much larger ships up to 400 meters long. To provide economic benefits to the city and the nation, the port’s receiving capacity will be increased The structure of this breakwater is mammoth: consisting of 100 concrete caissons that are installed with a submersible platform. The tallest ones exceed 33 meters, about the height of a 10-story skyscraper.
